Space Shuttle Discovery Belly

Space Shuttle Discovery Belly

A view of the charred under-belly of the Space Shuttle Discovery from the rear. The tiles are made of Silica ceramics, each uniquely designed to maintain the aerodynamic shape of the vehicle, while protecting the vessle from extreme heat levels from reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The darker tiles are recent replacements of broken or defectives pieces from previous missions and are very expensive to reproduce.
