The Discovery's Wing From Below

The Discovery's Wing From Below

The Discovery Aft Starboard underside in the Orbiter Processing Facility. The tiles are made of Silica ceramics, each uniquely designed to maintain the aerodynamic shape of the vehicle, while protecting the vessel from extreme heat levels from reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The darker tiles are recent replacements of broken or defectives pieces from previous missions and are very expensive to reproduce.
