Beneath the Redwood Canopy

Beneath the Redwood Canopy

Coastal Redwood forest Canopy at Humboldt State Park, Northern California. Paleobotanists think their extreme height was an evolutionary adaptation to avoid foraging dinosaurs that decimated other plant populations and to remain king in the ongoing struggle for sunlight in the some of the world's largest forests.

The incredibly fine resolution (> 1000 Megapixels) of this image was made possible through a process of synthesizing over 5000 images into a 360° map, which is projected onto a 2D plane with a transverse vedutismo projection. Each individual frame is a High Dynamic Range composite of 9 images. These frames are then stiched together, like a jigsaw puzzle, to produce the final product.

Printed at an exhibition quality 1440 dpi, this image would be 400'' x 4800'' in size for a one-to-one scale.
