Space Shuttle Discovery's Shuttle Bay and Airlock

Space Shuttle Discovery's Shuttle Bay and Airlock

Peering through the airlock of the space shuttle Discovery, into the vehicle's cargo bay at Kennedy Space Center. After launch this is the exit chamber where astronauts first emerged from their vehicle into space or made connection between the shuttle and the International Space Station. It was through the cargo bay that Discovery initially launched the legendary Hubble Space Telescope. The airlock was only meant for two astronauts to exit at a time, and you can see this indicated in the center platform with, "Capacity 2 Men."
